2022-2023 Les Mornes, Le Feu (Saltwater and Other Ghosts)
Photographic series, variable formats
+ Limited edition fanzine MEP x Morel Books
Les Mornes, Le Feu is a series born out of Cédrine Scheidig’s fascination with urban culture in the Caribbean. Drawing on the idea of an associative language, a concept deeply rooted in the rhizomatic thought of Caribbean poet Édouard Glissant, the project seeks to explore Caribbean youth and the vernacular practices that have developed on the margins of the former colonial city.
Rhizomatic connections emerge through the historical legacy of slavery, the culture of amplified music, the influence of the United States, Black emancipation movements, marronage, and bling, all coexisting in the Caribbean city alongside an overabundant nature and a floating sense of protective
spiritualism. Breaking away from the idyllic imagery and stereotypes associated with Caribbean identity, the photographs offer alternative depictions of island life and tender portraits of Black masculinity.
Centering the perspective of a generation in search of renewed narratives and new forms of belonging, the project explores how young people connect with the visible and invisible layers of the world they inhabit. Details of bodies and objects become artifacts charged with symbols. Landscapes, whether concrete or vegetal, abandoned or lush, play both the role of setting and protagonist. In this universe traversed by signs and echoes, the youth compose shifting identities, sometimes painful, always inventive.
